Death Cab For Cutie Live at the Momentary – Bentonville, AR

On Saturday night, July 25th, Death Cab for Cutie played a sold-out show on the Green at The Momentary in Bentonville, Arkansas. With zero air movement, 97 degrees Fahrenheit at showtime, and the infamous Arkansas humidity bearing down on the exposed lawn of the Momentary, it made for a sweaty experience for those who not only attended the concert but also for those on the stage.

Despite the oppressive conditions, Death Cab for Cutie never let the energy sag. Opening the show with “Riptides,” the lead single from their recently released album I Built You a Tower, the band immediately settled into its groove. It was a brilliant way to get the crowd moving their feet and swaying along to the music before ripping into Roman Candles.

The 24-song set struck a satisfying balance between nostalgia and new material. Fan favorites like Soul Meets Body, Crooked Teeth, I Will Follow You Into the Dark, and the slow-burning epic Transatlanticism were met with thunderous singalongs, while six songs from I Built You a Tower proved the band isn’t content to live in the past.

As darkness settled over the lawn, the lighting technicians did what they do best. Every so often, the stage exploded with brilliant white light, freezing the band in stark silhouette before darkness reclaimed the moment. It was dramatic without feeling excessive, perfectly complementing the emotional weight of the songs.

In between songs, Ben Gibbard proudly announced to the crowd that he enjoyed the downtown Bentonville area and even partook in the local farmers market that Saturday morning before the show. Gibbard also joked about the lingering heat, which remained oppressive well after the band’s 9 p.m. start. By the end of the night, every member of the band looked as drenched as the fans pressed against the barricade.

The nearly two-hour set appeared to be well received even though the weather was exhausting, with fans singing along from the barricade to the exit.

Nearly three decades after Ben Gibbard began Death Cab for Cutie as a solo recording project, the band’s songs continue to serve as the soundtrack to different chapters of their fans’ lives. On a sweltering Arkansas night, neither the heat nor the humidity could diminish that connection. If anything, surviving the elements together only made the performance feel that much more memorable.

That’s the mark of a memorable concert. Not when the conditions are perfect, but when the music makes you forget how imperfect they really are.
