Khemmis – Bringing Denver Doom To Oklahoma City

Formed in 2012, Khemmis blends melodic doom metal with hints of sludge and traditional heavy metal.

Releasing four albums since 2015 (Absolution (2015), Hunted (2016), Desolation (2018), and Deceiver (2021), they have a self-titled new album coming out on June 12th through Nuclear Blast records.

While I was not familiar with Khemmis before this show, their stage presence mixed with crushing riffs and vocal harmonies made me a fan. I could see them being compared to Little Rock, Arkansas Doom giants Pallbearer. I feel like they stand in the Doom genre on their own though.

How they ended their set is what really caught me off guard. Their final song was “A Conversation with Death”, which is their melodic doom take on the traditional Appalachian tune by Lloyd Chandler, “O’ Death”. While Ralph Stanleys version is widely popular, I think Khemmis’ version is just as haunting. After some research apparently the song has over 7 million listens on Spotify alone, so I’m late to the party. (Apparently they cover “Rainbow in the Dark” as well).

I hope you enjoy the photo gallery of Khemmis below.
